The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
