A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
